Surp Stepanos Church

Recent Photographs--the Murals of the Evangelists

Below the dome of the church, four large murals were painted directly onto the plaster of the building.  No vintage photographs of these paintings are known to exist, and the artist is unknown.  Two of the murals have now greatly deteriorated, largely due to their exposure to the elements (the dome of the church is missing).  Two of the murals, however, have survived largely intact, and would suggest that each mural was an individual portrait of the authors of the four gospels.
